Some of the most beloved foods in a Bahraini kitchen are lethal to dogs. Worse, many of them do not show effects immediately, so an accident at 3pm might not become a vet emergency until 9pm. Here is the full toxic list, with severity notes.
Severity Level: Lethal
Chocolate
Dark chocolate especially. The toxic compound is theobromine. As little as 20g of dark chocolate can kill a small dog. Symptoms: vomiting, hyperactivity, racing heart, seizures, death.
Xylitol
A sweetener in sugar-free gum, sugar-free peanut butter, some toothpastes, some baked goods. Drops blood sugar catastrophically. Can be lethal in tiny amounts. Always check ingredient lists before sharing human peanut butter.
Grapes and Raisins
Cause acute kidney failure. The mechanism is not fully understood, but as few as 4 to 5 grapes can kill a medium-sized dog. Sultanas in baking and cereal bars are equally dangerous.
Onion and Garlic Family
Chicken & Veg Meal (Cooked)

Includes shallots, leeks, chives, spring onions. Damages red blood cells. Cumulative, so a tiny piece every day adds up. Common in Bahraini cooking, biryani, machboos, kebab seasonings. Never feed table scraps from these dishes.
Macadamia Nuts
Cause weakness, vomiting, tremors. Less commonly fatal but seriously unpleasant.
Severity Level: Highly Dangerous
Coffee, Tea, Caffeine
All forms. The Bahrain morning karak is for you, not them. Caffeine causes racing heart, tremors, hyperactivity.
Alcohol
In any form. Dogs metabolise it dangerously fast. Even baked goods made with alcohol are risky.
Avocado

Persin in skin, leaves, and pit causes vomiting and diarrhoea. The flesh in small amounts is less toxic but still risky.
Cooked Bones
Splinter. Pierce stomach lining. Always supervised raw bones if any, never cooked.
Severity Level: Avoid
Salt
Salty snacks (chips, salted nuts) cause excessive thirst and sodium poisoning in large amounts. Never feed seasoned human food.
Dairy
Many adult dogs are lactose intolerant. Cheese as occasional treats is fine for most, but milk and cream often cause diarrhoea.
Raw Bread Dough
Fish & Veg Meal (Cooked)

Rises in the stomach, causes bloat. Yeast also produces alcohol as it ferments. Genuinely dangerous.
Stone Fruits
Pits contain cyanide compounds, plus the pit itself is a choking and obstruction hazard. Apricots, peaches, cherries, plums, all keep away.
Citrus
Some dogs are sensitive. Most can handle a tiny bit of orange flesh, but skin and seeds are problematic. Easier to just skip.
Common Bahrain Risks
- Dates (in moderation, pit removed): Most dogs tolerate small amounts of fresh date flesh, but the pit is a choking risk and dates are very high sugar.
- Biryani and machboos: Contain onions, garlic, and rich spices. Never feed.
- Karak chai with milk: Caffeine plus milk equals double trouble.
- Falafel: Garlic and onions. Skip.
- Halwa: High sugar, often contains macadamia or pistachio.
- Stuffed dates with nuts: Skip entirely.
What If They Already Ate Something
Call your vet immediately. Have the ingredient list of whatever they ate, the rough amount, and the time. Do NOT induce vomiting unless the vet tells you to. Some toxins are worse coming back up than going down.
