In an emergency, the time between something going wrong and you getting your dog to the vet is the most important factor. Knowing the basics of pet first aid does not replace the vet, but it can save your dog’s life in the gap. Print this. Save it. Hope you never need it.
Build a Pet First Aid Kit
- Gauze pads and rolled bandages.
- Saline solution for eye flushing.
- Antiseptic wipes (non-stinging).
- Tweezers and blunt-tipped scissors.
- Thermometer (rectal, dog-specific).
- Hydrogen peroxide 3 percent (only for induced vomiting under vet instruction).
- Activated charcoal (vet-recommended dose).
- Cooling spray or wet towels.
- Your vet’s emergency number, programmed and printed.
- Spare leash and muzzle (even friendly dogs bite when in pain).
Heatstroke: The Number One Bahrain Emergency
Symptoms: heavy panting, bright red gums, drooling, vomiting, wobbly walking, collapse.
What to do:
- Move immediately to AC or shade.
- Wet the dog with cool, NOT cold, water. Focus on paws, belly, armpits.
- Place a wet towel over them.
- Offer (do not force) cool water.
- Drive to the vet now, even if symptoms improve. Internal damage can continue after external signs fade.
Choking
Chicken Broth
High in collagen for joint support. Provides hydration. Promotes gut health. Source of vitamins, minerals & nutrients. Low-calorie food. Directions: serve four to five tablespoons for every 10 kg.
What to do:
- Open the mouth and look for the object. Only remove if you can clearly see and grasp it.
- Never push fingers blindly down the throat, you can push the object deeper.
- For small dogs: hold them upside down by the hind legs and give 5 firm chest thumps.
- For large dogs: stand behind, lift their hind legs like a wheelbarrow, give firm thrusts up and forward under the rib cage.
- If choking persists, drive to the vet now.
Cuts and Bleeding
- Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze for at least 5 minutes.
- Do not lift the cloth to peek, you disrupt clotting.
- Elevate the wounded area if possible.
- For deep cuts, bandage and go to vet.
- For paw cuts, a clean sock taped on top of a bandage is a great makeshift boot.
Burns (Heat or Chemical)
- Cool the area with cold running water for at least 10 minutes.
- Do not apply butter, ice, or ointment.
- Cover loosely with a clean cloth.
- Vet visit, especially for chemical burns or large area burns.
Poisoning

Bahrain pet poisons to watch for: chocolate, xylitol (in chewing gum, some peanut butters, some medications), grapes and raisins, onion and garlic, certain houseplants, antifreeze, rat poison, human medications.
What to do:
- Identify what they ate, when, how much.
- Call the vet immediately.
- Do NOT induce vomiting unless the vet tells you to. Some substances cause more damage coming up than going down.
- Bring the substance container with you to the vet.
Bee Stings and Snake Bites
Bahrain has some snake species, mostly non-venomous, but treat all bites as serious.
- Keep the dog calm and still.
- Carry, do not let them walk, if leg is bitten.
- Vet immediately.
- Do not attempt to suck out venom or apply tourniquet.
Seizures
Do not put hands near the mouth. Move objects away from the dog. Time the seizure. Most stop within 2 minutes. If longer than 5 minutes, vet emergency.

Common, usually not emergency unless prolonged, contains blood, or accompanied by lethargy. Withhold food for 12 hours, offer small amounts of chicken broth for hydration. Reintroduce food slowly with bland options like our Chicken and Veg Meal. If symptoms persist beyond 24 hours, vet visit.
Eye Injuries
Flush gently with saline solution. Do not rub or apply pressure. Vet visit urgently, eyes deteriorate fast.
Broken Bones
Do not attempt to splint. Confine the dog to limit movement, use a towel or board to carry, go to vet immediately.
