Caring for a Pregnant Dog in Bahrain: Nutrition, Comfort, and the Whelping

Golden Retriever Dog Breed

Dog pregnancy lasts about 63 days. Those nine weeks need significantly more nutrition, calm environment, and prep than non-pregnant care. Whether the pregnancy was planned or surprise, here is the playbook.

Confirming the Pregnancy

Most reliable: ultrasound at 28 to 35 days. Blood test for relaxin hormone after day 25. Physical signs (enlarged nipples, weight gain, behaviour change) appear from week 3 onwards but can be misleading.

Weeks 1 to 4: Maintain Normal

In early pregnancy, feed her normal diet at normal portions. Avoid rough play but keep moderate exercise. Most dogs show few external signs.

Weeks 5 to 6: Increase Nutrition

This is when the puppies grow rapidly. Calorie needs increase 30 to 50 percent.

  • Move to puppy food OR an enriched adult fresh meal. Our Chicken and Veg Meal with added chicken broth gives the protein density needed.
  • Split into smaller, more frequent meals. The growing uterus presses on the stomach.
  • Add omega-3s from Fish and Veg rotations. Critical for puppy brain development.
  • Calcium support: Whole-food sources like cooked egg yolk.

Weeks 7 to 9: Maximum Care

By week 7, calorie needs may be 50 to 100 percent above normal. Keep her comfortable, well-fed, and limit strenuous activity.

  • 4 to 5 small meals daily.
  • Constant access to water.
  • Cool, quiet rest area.
  • Build a whelping box in a low-traffic spot. Cardboard or plastic, with clean towels, low sides for her to step over but high enough to contain puppies.

Signs Whelping Is Imminent

  • Temperature drops below 37 degrees C 12 to 24 hours before labour.
  • Restlessness, panting, nesting behaviour.
  • Loss of appetite in last 24 hours.
  • Clear vaginal discharge.

During Whelping

Most dogs whelp without human intervention. Your job is calm presence.

  • Stay nearby, observe quietly.
  • Have the vet on speed dial.
  • Each puppy should appear every 30 to 60 minutes once active labour starts. Longer pauses are normal, but more than 2 hours between puppies with visible distress is a vet emergency.
  • The mother typically chews through the umbilical cord and cleans each puppy. If she does not, you may need to assist (clean towel to dry the puppy, sterile scissors to cut cord about 2cm from puppy).

When to Call the Vet Urgently

  • Active labour for over 2 hours without producing a puppy.
  • A puppy stuck in the birth canal.
  • Heavy bleeding.
  • Mother seems exhausted or distressed.
  • Green discharge before first puppy (placenta detaching).

Post-Birth Recovery

Chicken Broth

High in collagen for joint support. Provides hydration. Promotes gut health. Source of vitamins, minerals & nutrients. Low-calorie food. Directions: serve four to five tablespoons for every 10 kg.

  • Quiet, undisturbed room. She and the puppies should not be handled excessively for the first few days.
  • Lots of food and water. Nursing mothers eat enormous amounts. Up to 4 times normal portions of fresh Chicken or Lamb meals.
  • Chicken broth constantly available. Hydration drives milk production.
  • Vet check within 24 hours. For mother and puppies.

The Puppies' First Weeks

  • Weeks 1 to 3: Mother handles everything. Eyes open at 10 to 14 days.
  • Weeks 3 to 4: Begin introducing solid food, soft fresh meal moistened with broth or warm water.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: Increasingly solid food. Begin socialisation handling.
  • Weeks 6 to 8: Fully weaned. Ready for homes from week 8 minimum.

If You Did Not Plan This Pregnancy

Talk to your vet about future spaying. One litter is enough for almost any dog who was not bred deliberately. Stray dog population in Bahrain is a real concern, responsible breeding means knowing why and not by accident.

The Bottom Line

A pregnant dog is doing one of the most demanding things a body can do. Feed her well, keep her calm, have a vet on standby. Fresh, high-quality protein from Bubbles and Miche gives mother and puppies the foundation they need.

Calm. Well-fed. Watched closely. Then trust her body.
