If you have ever stood at a food bowl wondering whether you are over-feeding or under-feeding your dog, you are in a very large club. The scoop on the kibble bag says one thing, your dog’s puppy eyes say another, and the vet said something you cannot quite remember. Here is the honest, practical Bahrain pet parent’s guide to portion sizing.
The Three Variables That Actually Matter
- Weight: Not what you want them to weigh. What they actually weigh today.
- Activity level: A weekend athlete Lab needs more than a couch-loving Frenchie.
- Life stage: Puppies eat proportionally more. Seniors eat less.
The Rough Starting Formula
For fresh, gently-cooked meals like our Chicken and Veg Meal, a healthy adult dog eats roughly 2 to 3 percent of their body weight in food per day.
- 5 kg dog: 100 to 150g per day
- 10 kg dog: 200 to 300g per day
- 20 kg dog: 400 to 600g per day
- 30 kg dog: 600 to 900g per day
- 40 kg dog: 800 to 1,200g per day
These are starting points. Watch your dog for the first two weeks and adjust.
The Body Condition Check
Chicken & Veg Meal (Cooked)
This is a balanced meal for dogs. Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.
Ribs matter more than the scale. Feel your dog’s rib cage. You should be able to feel individual ribs with light pressure. Not see them (too thin) but not have to press hard to find them (too heavy). Check every two weeks and adjust portions by 10 percent up or down as needed.
Split Meals By Age
- Puppies (under 6 months): 3 to 4 meals a day
- Puppies (6 to 12 months): 2 to 3 meals a day
- Adults: 2 meals a day (rare exceptions for very small breeds who need 3)
- Seniors: 2 to 3 smaller meals a day
Why Fresh Food Portions Are Different From Kibble
Kibble is calorie-dense (moisture stripped out). Fresh food is naturally hydrating (70 percent moisture). This means fresh meal portions look larger in the bowl but usually match kibble in total calories. Do not panic when the bowl looks fuller, the food itself is lighter per bite.
The Bahrain Climate Adjustment
Lamb & Veg Meal (Cooked)
This is a balanced meal for dogs. Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.
In peak summer (June to September), most dogs slightly reduce their food intake naturally, they burn less energy panting than running. Follow their lead, do not force. Increase chicken broth as a hydration-plus-calories topper if they are eating less.
Signs You Are Over-Feeding
- Waist disappearing when viewed from above
- Difficulty feeling ribs without pressing
- Reluctance to exercise or fatigue easily
- Leftover food in the bowl regularly
Signs You Are Under-Feeding
- Visible ribs, spine, or hip bones
- Food-obsessed behaviour, scavenging, food guarding
- Poor coat condition
- Low energy, lethargic
- Weight loss without a health reason
Treats In The Math
Chicken Broth
High in collagen for joint support. Provides hydration. Promotes gut health. Source of vitamins, minerals & nutrients. Low-calorie food. Directions: serve four to five tablespoons for every 10 kg.
Treats should not exceed 10 percent of daily calories. Adjust meal portions on heavy training days. Small, low-calorie treats like Bone-a-petites and Barkies make this math easier than dense chews.
Breed-Specific Notes
- Labradors and Goldens: Genetic tendency to overeat. Measure everything.
- Frenchies and Pugs: Gain weight fast. Portion strictly.
- Huskies: Efficient metabolism, often need less than owners assume.
- Salukis and sighthounds: Naturally lean, do not force them to look chunky.
Multi-Dog Households
Feed separately. One dog will always try to eat both bowls. Separate rooms or gated areas prevent resource guarding and let you actually track who is eating what.
