Dog Weight Management in Bahrain: Slimming Down Safely

Labrador Retriever Dog Breed

Over half of pet dogs worldwide are overweight. In the Gulf, where daytime outdoor exercise is restricted for months of the year, the number is even higher. If your dog is carrying extra weight, you are not alone, and it is fixable. Here is the safe, no-guilt playbook.

Is Your Dog Actually Overweight

Vets use a 9-point Body Condition Score. Home version:

  • You should feel ribs with light pressure, like feeling the back of your hand with a light glove on. Cannot feel them = overweight
  • You should see a waist when viewed from above. No waist = overweight
  • You should see a slight tuck in the belly when viewed from the side. Belly hanging low = overweight
  • Rolls of fat at the base of the tail or neck = overweight

Why Dogs Gain Weight

  • Too much food: The universal cause
  • Too many treats: Especially calorie-dense ones
  • Table scraps: Human food is denser than dog food
  • Not enough exercise: Bahrain summers hit hard
  • Free-feeding: Cannot track intake
  • Medical: Hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease. Rule these out with a vet if diet and exercise are not working

The Slim-Down Protocol

Step 1: Vet Visit

Chicken & Veg Meal (Cooked)

This is a balanced meal for dogs.  Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.

Before starting any weight loss plan, rule out medical causes. Blood panel checks thyroid, adrenals, and general health. It also gives you a starting weight number to work from.

Step 2: Calculate Target

Aim for 1 to 2 percent body weight loss per week. Slower is safer, faster risks muscle loss and metabolic issues. A 20 kg dog aiming to reach 17 kg should take 6 to 12 weeks, not two.

Step 3: Portion Control

Reduce daily food by 10 to 15 percent to start. Weigh food, do not eyeball. A kitchen scale is your new best friend. Fresh, portion-friendly meals like our Chicken and Veg Meal and Lamb and Veg Meal make measuring straightforward.

Step 4: Rethink Treats

Cut treat count in half. Switch to lower-calorie options like Bone-a-petites broken in half. Fresh vegetables like cucumber, carrot, and cooked pumpkin are near-zero-calorie chewing satisfaction.

Step 5: Add Volume Without Calories

Lamb & Veg Meal (Cooked)

This is a balanced meal for dogs.  Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.

If your dog is genuinely hungrier on reduced portions, add volume with steamed pumpkin, green beans, or a splash of chicken broth. Satiety without calorie load.

Step 6: Structured Exercise

In Bahrain, this means:

  • Pre-6am walks: Longer than you think. 30 to 45 minutes
  • Post-9pm walks: 20 to 30 minutes
  • Indoor structured play: Trick training, puzzle feeders, fetch in AC rooms
  • Swimming: If accessible, low-impact and calorie-burning

Step 7: Track Weekly

Weigh weekly, same time, same scale. Track. Progress is not linear, but the trend should be down. Adjust portions by another 5 percent if no loss after 3 weeks.

What NOT To Do

  • Crash diets: Rapid weight loss causes hepatic lipidosis (liver disease), especially in cats but also in dogs
  • Cut protein: Dogs need protein for muscle. Cut carbs and fat, not protein. Fresh meals are protein-dense
  • Skip meals entirely: Slows metabolism. Better to feed smaller amounts more often
  • Ignore treats: They count
  • Ignore begging: Their weight is your responsibility, not theirs

Multi-Dog Households

Bone-a-petites

Real Beef Biscuits. * High-Fibre * Easy on Digestion. Human-grade ingredients. Oven-baked. Perfect as Snacks. Made With Love.

The overweight dog will steal from the other bowl. Feed separately in different rooms during the weight loss phase. Frustrating but necessary.

Emotional Component

Feeding is love in a lot of households. Redirect the love: more play, more walks, more training sessions with reduced-calorie rewards. Your dog does not care about the food, they care about the attention that came with it.

Breed-Specific Notes

  • Labradors: The champion overeaters. Genetic hunger. Strict portioning required
  • Frenchies: Gain weight from looking at food. Very small portions
  • Beagles: Will eat until they burst. Locked bins
  • Sighthounds: Should look lean. Do not let anyone tell you your Saluki is too thin, that is the breed

Maintenance After Weight Loss

Once your dog reaches target weight, increase daily food by 10 percent for a fortnight. Reweigh. Adjust. Fresh, portion-controlled meals from Bubbles and Miche make lifelong weight maintenance easier than kibble.

The Bottom Line

Chicken Broth

High in collagen for joint support. Provides hydration. Promotes gut health. Source of vitamins, minerals & nutrients. Low-calorie food. Directions: serve four to five tablespoons for every 10 kg.

Slow, steady, portioned, patient. 1 to 2 percent per week. Fresh food, measured treats, honest exercise. Your dog gets years of extra healthy life from this one project.

Weigh food. Weigh dog. Track weekly. Slim, steady, safe.
