There’s a German Shepherd in every other Bahraini villa with a garden. They’re the country’s favourite security companion, family protector, and dramatic-at-bath-time housemate. They’re also the breed most likely to be struggling silently with the heat, the dust, and a diet that hasn’t been adapted from its European origins.
The Climate Problem Nobody Talks About
Beef & Veg Meal (Cooked)
This is a balanced meal for dogs. Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.
German Shepherds were bred in Bavaria. Their double coat, body mass, and energy output were calibrated for cold, damp Central European hillsides. Bahrain is the opposite of that. The result: a breed working harder to regulate temperature than almost any other commonly-kept dog in the country.
If your GSD pants constantly, loses appetite in summer, or sheds in alarming quantities, that’s not a phase. That’s a dog trying to cope.
Diet: The Single Biggest Lever You Can Pull
Chicken Broth
High in collagen for joint support. Provides hydration. Promotes gut health. Source of vitamins, minerals & nutrients. Low-calorie food. Directions: serve four to five tablespoons for every 10 kg.
A high-moisture, anti-inflammatory diet does more for a Bahrain GSD than any cooling mat or fan. Three principles:
- Moisture-rich primary meals: Fresh cooked food (70% moisture) versus kibble (10%). Pick the obvious winner. Our Beef & Veg Meal is a GSD favourite.
- Lean protein rotation: Heavy meats overload digestion in heat. Rotate Chicken and Fish with periodic Lamb.
- Broth-topped feeding in summer: Pour warm-then-cooled chicken broth over every meal between May and September.

A healthy adult GSD (30-40 kg) needs roughly 1,500-2,000 calories per day, more if they’re working dogs. Fresh meals are calorie-dense; you’ll feed less by volume than you would kibble. Watch the waistline more than the scale, you should see a tucked-up belly when viewed from the side.
Exercise: Time of Day Matters More Than Distance
Crack-a-lickin Liver with Veggies
Liver Crackers with real veggies. Perfect as snacks or training. Low fat protein source. Made with love.
- Pre-6am: Long structured walks. Cool pavement, low humidity.
- Midday: Indoor games. Tug, nosework, basic obedience. Never the garden in summer.
- Post-8pm: Second walk, slower. Bring water.
Training Treats Worth Using
GSDs are intensely food-motivated, use it. High-value protein treats like Lamb Lung Bites or Crack-a-lickin Liver are gold for recall, heel work, and complex commands. Avoid sugary or grain-based commercial treats.
Common GSD Health Issues You Should Watch
- Hip and elbow dysplasia: Genetic, but exacerbated by obesity. Keep them lean.
- Bloat (GDV): Never exercise immediately after a big meal. Split daily food into two or three feedings.
- Skin allergies: Often food-related. Switching to a single-protein fresh diet resolves most cases within 6 weeks.
- Pano (growing pain): Puppies under 18 months. Easy on the leg-heavy exercise.
The Bottom Line
A GSD in Bahrain is a high-performance animal living in a thermally hostile environment. Diet is your most powerful tool. Move them from kibble to fresh, hydrating meals from Bubbles & Miche and you’ll see the dog they were meant to be.
One fresh meal a day. Broth on top in summer. Walk before the sun’s up. Your GSD will thank you for the rest of their life.
