Grooming in Bahrain has its own rules. The heat, the sand, the salt from beach walks, and a tendency for owners to over-bathe their dogs in summer add up to challenges you would not face in Europe. Here is how to groom right in the Gulf.
The Bath Frequency Question
Most dogs need a bath once every 4 to 8 weeks, not weekly. Over-bathing strips natural oils, dries the skin, and ironically increases shedding and odour. Exception: after beach swims (rinse with fresh water), and if your dog has rolled in something unspeakable.
The Shampoo Decision
- Mild, dog-specific shampoo only. Human shampoo destroys their skin pH.
- Oatmeal-based for sensitive skin.
- Medicated only if a vet prescribes.
- Never use shampoo on the face, use a damp cloth instead.
The One Rule That Saves Lives: Do Not Shave Double Coats
Fish & Veg Meal (Cooked)
This is a balanced meal for dogs. Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.
Huskies, Goldens, German Shepherds, Pomeranians, Samoyeds, Malamutes, do not shave them. Their double coat is insulation in both directions, cold and heat. Shaving removes that protection and exposes skin to dangerous UV. Brush instead. De-shed weekly with an undercoat rake. Let biology handle the rest.
Coats That Do Need Trimming
Single-coated breeds (Poodles, Shih Tzus, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Yorkies) need regular trims, every 4 to 8 weeks. Their hair does not stop growing the way double coats do.
Brushing: The Most Underrated Part of Grooming
- Short coats (Labs, Frenchies, Beagles): Weekly with a rubber curry brush.
- Double coats (Huskies, GSDs): Multiple times a week, plus heavy de-shed sessions during coat blow seasons.
- Long single coats (Maltese, Shih Tzu, Yorkie): Daily, otherwise mats form.
- Curly coats (Poodles, doodles): Daily plus regular professional trims.
Nails

If you can hear your dog’s nails clicking on the floor, they are too long. Long nails change a dog’s posture and can lead to joint pain. Trim every 3 to 4 weeks. If you are nervous, ask the vet or a groomer to demonstrate the first time. Avoid the quick (the pink part inside the nail).
Teeth
Dental disease is rampant in pet dogs and almost entirely preventable. Brush teeth 2 to 3 times a week with dog toothpaste, never human (xylitol is toxic). For dogs who hate brushing, raw recreational bones (always supervised) and dental chews help. Avoid hard nylon bones, they crack teeth.
Ears
Floppy-eared breeds (Labs, Cocker Spaniels, Goldens, Frenchies) are prone to ear infections in Bahrain’s humidity. Check weekly. A vet-approved ear cleaner on a cotton pad keeps them healthy. Never insert anything into the ear canal.
Eyes

White-coated breeds (Maltese, Shih Tzu, Bichon) often develop tear stains. A clean damp cloth daily, and a dietary check, tear staining is often food-related. Many owners report tear stains clear up after switching to a single-protein fresh diet.
Paw Pad Care in Bahrain
Hot pavement is the silent killer of paw pads. In summer, walk only on cool surfaces, apply paw wax for any midday exposure, and rinse paws after every beach trip. Sand and salt are abrasive.
Anal Glands
Yes, we are going there. Some dogs need their anal glands expressed regularly, especially small breeds. Signs include scooting, licking the rear, or a foul fishy smell. A groomer or vet can handle this, do not attempt it yourself without training.
Coat Health Starts in the Bowl
Chicken Broth
High in collagen for joint support. Provides hydration. Promotes gut health. Source of vitamins, minerals & nutrients. Low-calorie food. Directions: serve four to five tablespoons for every 10 kg.
No amount of brushing fixes a dull, dry coat caused by poor nutrition. Omega-3s from Fish and Veg Meal, real protein from Chicken and Lamb meals, and bone broth daily are the foundation of a coat that grooms easily.
The Bottom Line
Grooming in Bahrain is less about looks and more about health, especially in summer. Stick to the basics, never shave double coats, and feed the right meals from Bubbles and Miche to build a coat that practically grooms itself.
Brush more. Bathe less. Never shave. Feed right.
