Dog Dental Care Bahrain: Home Care, Vet Care, and Why It Matters

Labrador Retriever Dog Breed

Bad breath is not just annoying. It is usually the first sign of dental disease, which is the most common chronic condition in dogs, and one of the most preventable. Here is how to keep your dog’s teeth healthy for life.

Why Dental Health Matters More Than People Realise

Bacterial infection in the gums does not stay in the mouth. It enters the bloodstream and damages the heart, kidneys, and liver. Dogs with untreated periodontal disease often lose years of life not to dental issues themselves but to what those bacteria do to organs.

Signs Something Is Wrong

  • Persistent bad breath (not just after eating)
  • Yellow or brown tartar buildup at the gum line
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Reluctance to chew hard foods
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Drooling more than usual
  • Loose or missing teeth (advanced stage)

Home Dental Care: The Basics

Lambtastic – 100% Natural Lamb Lung Bites (50g)

Introducing Lambtastic – Lamb Lung Bites, a clean, single-ingredient treat crafted for dogs that deserve healthy, flavorful rewards. Made with 100% lamb lungs, these crunchy bites deliver natural protein, essential nutrients, and an irresi

Brushing

The gold standard. 2 to 3 times a week minimum with a dog-specific toothbrush and dog toothpaste. Human toothpaste contains xylitol which is lethal to dogs, never use it.

  • Start slow, one tooth at a time initially
  • Let the dog taste the toothpaste first (they are usually chicken or beef flavoured)
  • Focus on the outer surfaces of the teeth (tongue handles inner)
  • Reward with a treat after: Bone-a-petites work well

Dental Chews

Not all chews are equal. Look for the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal on any product. Avoid: hard nylon bones (crack teeth), rawhide (choking hazard, chemical processing concerns), tennis balls (abrasive).

Better: natural raw recreational bones (always supervised), single-ingredient meat chews like our Lambtastic Lamb Lung Bites or Bubbles Crunchy Chicken.

Water Additives

Bubbles Crunchy Chicken

Single ingredient. Perfect for training. Human Grade Ingredients. Made with love High Protein. Low Fat

Enzyme-based dental water additives can help reduce plaque. Ask your vet for a recommended brand. Not a substitute for brushing.

Dental Toys

Rubber Kongs and specific dental design chews can help. Anything the dog chews for extended periods that is not damagingly hard supports dental health.

The Diet Connection

The myth that dry kibble cleans teeth is largely false, most dogs swallow kibble whole or crunch it in a way that provides no cleaning. What actually helps: real chewing on appropriate materials, and a fresh diet that does not leave sugary residue between teeth. Our meals are naturally low in the fillers that feed oral bacteria.

Professional Vet Cleanings

Bone-a-petites

Real Beef Biscuits. * High-Fibre * Easy on Digestion. Human-grade ingredients. Oven-baked. Perfect as Snacks. Made With Love.

Most dogs need professional dental cleanings under anaesthesia every 1 to 3 years, depending on breed and home care. Small breeds and brachycephalic breeds need them more often. It sounds intimidating but modern anaesthesia is very safe when pre-op bloodwork is normal.

What A Professional Cleaning Involves

  • Pre-anaesthesia bloodwork
  • General anaesthesia
  • Scaling above and below the gum line
  • Polishing
  • Extractions if needed
  • Sometimes dental X-rays

Skipping this because you are worried about anaesthesia is a false economy, the periodontal disease being left untreated is far more dangerous than the sedation.

Breed-Specific Notes

  • Small breeds: Prone to overcrowded teeth and severe periodontal disease. Aggressive home care needed
  • Brachycephalic breeds (Frenchies, Pugs, Shih Tzus): Malaligned teeth, poor jaw structure. More frequent cleanings
  • Sighthounds (Salukis, Greyhounds): Prone to tooth decay. Extra vigilance
  • Large working breeds: Usually good natural dental health if given appropriate chews

Puppy Dental Care

Chicken & Veg Meal (Cooked)

This is a balanced meal for dogs.  Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.

Start young. Handle mouth daily from puppyhood. When adult teeth come in (4 to 6 months), begin gentle brushing. Establishing the habit early makes lifetime dental care easy.

Senior Dog Dental Care

Older dogs often need dental work removed as they age. This is not a failure, it is normal. Post-extraction, soft fresh food like our warmed Lamb and Veg Meal makes eating comfortable again.

The Bottom Line

Brush 2 to 3 times a week. Use appropriate chews. Get professional cleanings on schedule. Feed a clean fresh diet from Bubbles and Miche. Your dog’s teeth (and heart, and kidneys) will thank you.

Brush more than you think you need to. Skip nothing. Their whole body benefits.
