Kitten Care in Bahrain: The First Weeks Survival Guide

You have a new kitten. They are 200 grams of chaotic charm and they will change your life. Here is how to handle the first critical weeks so you set them up for a long, healthy Bahraini indoor cat life.

Week One: Adjusting

Kittens are shy on arrival. Do not force interaction. Set up a small quiet room with litter, food, water, and bedding. Let them explore at their own pace.

  • Room set-up: Bed in a cardboard box (kittens love enclosed spaces), food and water 3 metres from litter box, no ambush hiding places for you to accidentally step on them
  • First food: Match whatever they were eating at the shelter or breeder. Change nothing in week one
  • Vet visit within week one: Establishes baseline, checks for parasites
  • Handling: Gentle, brief, positive

Feeding Basics

Kittens need more calories per kilo than adult cats, more protein, more DHA for brain development. Feed 4 small meals a day for kittens under 3 months, 3 meals for 3 to 6 months, 2 meals from 6 months onwards. Our Chicken Meal for Cats is formulated for feline nutrition and suits growing kittens.

Water

Chicken Meal for cats

This is a complimentary meal for cats.  Directions: Freeze until ready to use. Thaw & serve. Once opened, use within 2 days. Keep refrigerated & separate from other foods. This product is not for human consumption.

Multiple water bowls, ideally in ceramic or stainless steel. Cats often prefer moving water, a small pet water fountain increases intake and reduces urinary issues later in life.

Litter Training

Kittens instinctively use litter. Your job is mostly setting up the right conditions.

  • Number of boxes: One per cat plus one extra
  • Type of litter: Unscented, fine grain preferred by most kittens
  • Box size: Low sides for kittens (they cannot climb in high walls)
  • Location: Quiet, private, not near food
  • Scoop daily: Cats will refuse dirty boxes and go elsewhere

Vaccination Schedule

  • 6 to 8 weeks: First combination vaccine
  • 10 to 12 weeks: Second combination
  • 14 to 16 weeks: Third combination plus rabies
  • 12 months: Full booster

Socialisation Window

Bubbles Crunchy Chicken Treats For Cats

Single ingredient. Perfect for training. Human Grade Ingredients. Made with love High Protein. Low Fat

Weeks 2 to 9 are the critical socialisation window for kittens. Handling, meeting different people, safe exposure to household sounds (vacuum, doorbell, adhan) all shape adult behaviour. A well-socialised kitten becomes a confident adult cat.

Play Is Non-Negotiable

Kittens need 2 to 3 short play sessions daily. Use wand toys (never fingers, teaches biting). End with a treat like Bubbles Crunchy Chicken Treats for Cats to complete the hunt-catch-eat sequence that satisfies their instinct.

Scratching Posts

Provide multiple scratching surfaces. Vertical (posts), horizontal (mats), different textures. Reward use with Zoomies Fish Treats. Redirect from furniture without punishment.

Introducing Other Pets

If you have an existing dog or cat, follow a slow scent-swap introduction protocol. Our full guide on introducing dogs and cats covers this in detail.

Bahrain-Specific Notes

  • Indoor kitten policy: Strongly recommended in Bahrain. Traffic, extreme heat, feral cats make outdoor life risky
  • AC awareness: Kittens overheat and freeze fast. Keep them in a stable 22 to 24 degree area
  • Sand tracking: Bahrain sand gets in litter, on paws, everywhere. Vacuum often
  • Balcony safety: High-rise apartments require cat-proofed screens, kittens fall

Signs of Trouble

Vet visit for: refusing food more than 24 hours, chronic diarrhoea, lethargy, difficulty breathing, obvious pain, blood in stool or urine.

Transition to Adult Food

Purrfection Cake

A Bahrain-made favourite — perfect addition to your pet’s routine.

Around 12 months. Gradual switch over 10 days. Move from kitten-specific formulation to adult cat food like our Chicken Meal for Cats, which suits both life stages.

The Bottom Line

The first weeks build the cat. Feed well, socialise thoughtfully, protect them from Bahrain’s specific risks. Bubbles and Miche cat food is engineered for what growing kittens actually need.

Quiet room. Fresh food. Play daily. Vet within week one.
